About
About this site.
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by. If you’re a horse person, this site is for you. If you’re financially, emotionally or otherwise supporting a horse person, this site is really for you. You have my sympathy. You are not alone. 🙂
There are lots of great horse destinations on the web. This one is different.
This is where you can find:
- Sympathy, not ridicule, for the amount of money you’re spending on this sport.
- Ideas for how to make the most of your child and/ or junior rider’s horse show dollar, including advice from parents who have (God forbid) more than one kid in this sport.
- A reminder of all of the good things and important life lessons that horses and horse showing teach kids and bring into our lives.
- A good laugh, usually at my expense.
This is also a place where you can share, complain, vent and cry. And if anyone in our community can help, I encourage them to speak up. This site is, in part, made possible by the support of The Chronicle of the Horse. The Chronicle is sort of the Sports Illustrated of the competitive equestrian world. It’s what all the cool kids read. Search the COTH forums when you’re in desperate need of something equestrian, you’ll find someone else out there who’s been there, figured it out.
You’ll also learn:
- How to get along with your child’s trainer, the barn owner, the barn workers and all of the other horse people you’ll encounter. Look for these posts under the category “barn manners.” Hey, I work for Emily Post, the skills transfer.
- Horse health care and general welfare–why horses need vaccinations, what’s the point of supplements, what to have in an emergency first aid kit for your horse.
- About the hunter/jumper and equitation world of horses and horse shows.
You’ll also be reading posts about me, my family and our equestrian adventures and the personalities we meet along the way.
About your host.
My name is Elizabeth. Horses have been part of my life for a long time. I learned to ride from Olana Laffey, who operates EvenStride. I live north of Burlington, Vermont. Our horse Chili Pepper lives at Jolly Stables, conveniently located about ten miles from home. My daughter has been riding for about seven years. She just turned 15. I refer to her as “the girl.” Currently, we’re at the painful juncture of trying to train a young horse.
I also have a son who is 12. He loves to hang out at the barn, but he’s really a hockey and lacrosse junky. I never had a brother or a boy cousin, so “the boy” is the wild card in my life. On any given day he is on my last nerve or making me laugh so hard I practically pee. Actually he usually does both to me every day.
Although I have a fairly respectable job as the director of marketing and brand partnerships at The Emily Post Institute, I am flat out busted. I spend every available dime on horses or hockey. I AM NOT COMPLAINING. Just trying to figure out how to get a few more dollars so we can go to more horse shows!!!! Ha, ha, ha, He, he, he. Oh, ho, ho! My father says it’s a sickness.

What a fantastic idea for a blog. I love your banner – what program did you use to create it?
Looking forward to reading more.
Thanks for publishing this site. Although not horse people yet, we will probably be in a year or so. My daughter is a rider and is asking us to get her a horse. We would like to do it but it is SCARY!!!! Anyhow, I may just have to follow along so I know what we are getting into!
