A terrible safety reminder October 14 2009, 0 Comments

This is a horrible story about a 21-year-old Harvard University student equestrian named Ariel Shaker who passed away last week after a riding accident.  She was a member of the Polo Team and was schooling one of the team horses on the flat at the team barn in Ipswich, MA. Apparently her horse spooked and bucked and she fell off. The horse accidentally fell on her. She wasn’t wearing a helmet. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

Just as we tell our children to always wear a seat belt, we need to also always insist that they wear a helmet when riding. There’s no way to know if the outcome would have been any different for Ariel, but nonetheless, it’s a reminder to us all to look out for each other. If you see a rider without a helmet on, speak up.
